An entirely special exhibition on Flensburg’s world famous airship pioneer is shown in Flensburg’s building: Nordertor.

“Once again I would like to emphasize, that the whole idea of the airship is not only a new form of transport for goods and passengers, but about a whole lot more. Simply a better way of contact between people, with aid of the technical advancement that airships now have command of.” (Hugo Eckener).

With the exhibition” Hugo Eckener, the phenomenon” one of Flensburg’s most fascinating personalities has been awarded a suitably great honor. There are not many other citizens from Flensborg that have achieved world wide popularity that Hugo Eckener has. In 1932 the Italian newspaper (still most respected today) “Corriere della Sera” printed the results of a public survey, that pointed to Dr Hugo Eckener as the most popular person in the whole world.  In Germany it was even suggested that Hugo was a possible candidate for the post of President of Germany.  How did a person from Flensborg become such a famous sensation?
